“Restoring Your Soul!” – Psalm 23:3
Are you familiar with Psalm 23? Written by King David, it is perhaps the best known psalm and favorite to many. David uses two metaphors in the psalm. The first is a shepherd watching over His sheep. What is David saying in this psalm? Perhaps the best way to understand is to see, is to look at the negative set, the opposite of the Psalm 23. It goes like this.

The Lord as my shepherd is an empty promise. There is no shepherd. I lead myself and what I have found is emptiness. I cry out because I am so alone and needy. I have wandered into a desert and the soil is dry, cracked and the grass has withered and lies pasty brown. The waters nearby are rancid, poisonous to the taste and its rottenness wafts it noxious smell. My soul is lost, empty. I have no meaning and hope. Oh Lord, restore my soul!

Question of the week: King David was a son of Jesse. The prophet Samuel was sent to anoint a son of Jesse as the new king of Israel. How many sons of Jesse appeared before Samuel before God indicated David was the chosen one?

Answer: Seven brothers of David appeared before Jesse and were not chosen. 1 Samuel 16 reads, “Samuel said to Jesse, ‘Are all your sons here?’ And he said, ‘There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep.'” Jesse was told to send for him. When David appeared before Samuel, “The Lord said, ‘Rise and anoint him; for this is the one.’ Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward.” 1 Samuel 16.

Life Notes

“Put All Your Anxieties on Him” – 1 Peter 5:7
What was it like to sit, wait, think and mourn for the one who loved you in a way that was unmatched? This most caring, miracle-performing, truth-speaking brother, son and friend who was betrayed, falsely accused, beaten and savagely humiliated. Then He was hung, strangled by the nailing of His stretched body on the Roman torture invention of the cross. Some had faithfully accompanied and watched Him die, others had abandoned him and now sat in their shame and grief as only a deserter knows. All ached with the loss of their Messiah.

Talk about anxiety. Did they try to console each other, give each other support? How could they but yet out of this dark pit they would be lifted up by the news that He lives. Christ is risen!

Question for Easter: Who was Salome?

Answer: Salome was one of the faithful women who was present at the crucifixion of Jesus, His burial and at the empty tomb after the resurrection of Jesus. She was the mother of James and John and most Biblical scholars believe she was the sister of Mary, the mother of Jesus.

“Share Christ’s Suffering” – 1 Peter 4:13
Perhaps the disciples of Jesus should have known what was going to happen that evening, but they didn’t. Even Peter, along with James and John, slept during the last hour of Christ’s freedom. It was a devastating and lonely time for Christ as He prayed in the garden, knowing that what Isaiah had written was soon to begin. Sit down beside Him and listen.

“He was despised and rejected — a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care. Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrow that weighed him down… But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole.
He was whipped so we could be healed.” Isaiah 53:3,4a & 5.

Question for Good Friday: How many years before crucifixion did Isaiah write his prophecy about the suffering of Jesus?

Answer: Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Isaiah wrote his prophecy about 700 years before the Friday that Christ died.

Life Notes

“Always be Ready” – 1 Peter 3:15
Were the disciples really ever ready for what Jesus was going to do next? There was a gap between an awareness that Jesus was the Messiah and what that really meant. Only experience, living and witnessing would bring that. The triumphant entry into Jerusalem with all the praise must have swelled their chest with pride, that this King was their Lord. They were chosen special and walking with him. Were they ready? No, not then.

What had changed for Peter as he writes these words to us, “in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.”

Question of the week: What did the disciples Andrew and Philip have in common?

Answer: Andrew and Philip were among the first five that Jesus called as disciples. Andrew brought his brother Peter to Jesus. Philip brought Nathaniel to Jesus. Both Philip and Andrew were from the same northern fishing village on the Sea of Galilee called Bethsaida.

Life Notes

“Live as People Who Are Free” – 1 Peter 2:16
Peter tells us to live as people who are free. What difference does it make to know that we are free from the pressure of law we cannot keep, free from sin, and free from death? If that it is true that we are no longer captives, how do we live?

Does it mean we will not experience hunger, fear, discrimination or pain? Does it mean we now have no responsibilities, no call to follow? No, Peter is saying that although difficulties will come in our life we can face them with the peace that passes all understanding. We are free by and with the power of God.

Question of the week: Who was Mary of Bethany? How did she know Jesus?

Answer: We know Mary of Bethany as the sister of Martha and Lazarus who all lived in Bethany, a small village near Jerusalem. Jesus and the disciples were often their guests.
