“Restoring Your Soul!” – Psalm 23:3
Are you familiar with Psalm 23? Written by King David, it is perhaps the best known psalm and favorite to many. David uses two metaphors in the psalm. The first is a shepherd watching over His sheep. What is David saying in this psalm? Perhaps the best way to understand is to see, is to look at the negative set, the opposite of the Psalm 23. It goes like this.

The Lord as my shepherd is an empty promise. There is no shepherd. I lead myself and what I have found is emptiness. I cry out because I am so alone and needy. I have wandered into a desert and the soil is dry, cracked and the grass has withered and lies pasty brown. The waters nearby are rancid, poisonous to the taste and its rottenness wafts it noxious smell. My soul is lost, empty. I have no meaning and hope. Oh Lord, restore my soul!

Question of the week: King David was a son of Jesse. The prophet Samuel was sent to anoint a son of Jesse as the new king of Israel. How many sons of Jesse appeared before Samuel before God indicated David was the chosen one?

Answer: Seven brothers of David appeared before Jesse and were not chosen. 1 Samuel 16 reads, “Samuel said to Jesse, ‘Are all your sons here?’ And he said, ‘There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep.'” Jesse was told to send for him. When David appeared before Samuel, “The Lord said, ‘Rise and anoint him; for this is the one.’ Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward.” 1 Samuel 16.
