Press On
As partners in the Gospel, how are we to live? In the letter to Philippians, Paul charges us, to live as lights in this world. How are we to be lights, holding fast to the word of life? Philippians 2:16. Easier said than done, Paul, we say.
Paul offers a solution, a formula to live by. These are the words: Give credit to God, forget what is behind and press on to the goal. Solid advice for all endeavors. Press on and do not give up is advice to live by but Paul does not leave it there. The goal must be defined and the goal is the “upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:14. What is this upward call?
Question of the week: Paul and Silas were imprisoned in Philippi. The city magistrates were very afraid after Paul accused them of punishing Roman citizens without a trial?. Why in particular was this a problem for the city administrators of Philippi?
Answer: Philippi had the distinction and privilege of being a Roman Colony. Therefore Roman law was strictly followed. The magistrates had broken the law.
