“The Spirit of the Lord God is Upon Me!”

“Remember: you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Those are the words that are said as the ashes of the palm branches are placed on our forehead Wednesday evening. But there is more. Dust is not our destiny. Our destiny is that the Spirit of the Lord is upon us. David writes, “Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.” Psalm 51:12 Lent is a time for an awareness and a reception of restoration. Isaiah writes about the Savior that was to come, live with us and heal.  Heal with His words, with His actions and with His life. Isaiah wrote, “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news…” Christ read the prophecy of Isaiah that He was to come, to heal, to bind wounds, to comfort and to proclaim salvation and freedom for all. After reading, Christ rolled up the ancient scroll and said, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled …” Luke 4:21 Today the ashes are place on our head and the Spirit of the Lord is upon us and by his grace we are healed.

Question: What actions of David led to his writing Psalm 51?

Answer: The answer is found in Psalm 51:1 which reads, “To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet went to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.” The entire details of David’s sin is given in Second Samuel 11.
