“Holy One of God” Luke 4:34
On a peaceful Sabbath morning worshipers had gathered in a synagogue in
Capernaum to pray and learn from Holy Scripture. A young rabbi was speaking with clarity and authority. Suddenly the solemnity of the sacred was broken as a loud voice was heard forcefully saying, “Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”
A confused, demon possessed tormented man was disrupting worship. It was time for the ushers to come forward and gently subdue the disrupter and take him away from the worshipers. But wait, the young rabbi Jesus, not addressing the man but rather the demon that possesses the man says, “Be silent and come out of him!” Luke 4:33-36 The demon threw the man down in front of them and was gone. The people asked of Jesus, “What is the limit of the power of His Word?” He is the “Holy One of God!”
Question: “Where is Capernaum?
Answer: Capernaum was a large Galilean fishing village and busy trading center. Capernaum became the home base for Jesus during his ministry and Peter, Andrew, James and John also lived there. It played a unique and important part in Christ’s life and ministry, and in his outreach to the people of Israel. The inhabitants of Capernaum, including various high ranking citizens, were given unique and abundant opportunities to hear Jesus Christ’s message firsthand and witness His awesome power and love.
