“The Hovering Spirit of God!” – Romans 8:18-27
Paul presents in the book of Romans the big picture, the greater story of the presence and work of God. We have seen Christ, our deliverer, rescuing us from our sin. We have seen God, our Father, claiming us as His children. In the message today, we see God, the Holy Spirit, at work in our lives. Seeing the Holy Spirit requires what perhaps can best described as a wide-angled lens.
In Genesis we read, “And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:2b. In Psalm 139, the Psalmist asks, “Where shall I go from your Spirit.” The Spirit is everywhere, in all the places we can imagine. The most powerful truth of the Spirit came from Jesus personally as He prepared them for His departure, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” John 14:26. Yes, the Spirit is with us.
Question of the week: What was Jesus announcing when in Luke it is recorded the He read these words from Isaiah, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me …”?
Answer: Jesus was announcing the beginning of His ministry by proclaiming the direction of the Holy Spirit. The text continues, “… to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor … today this Scripture has been fulfilled …” Luke 4.
